glacier XC Courses august & sept
XC routes along the high Alpine mountain chain.
The Zillertal lies extremely close to the main crumple zone of the Alps where 6-700 million years ago there was a clossial upheaval of rock.
This was then sculptured by countless ice ages. After the glaciers receeded they revealed what we know as the Alps today.
The main ridge of the Alps, the back bone if you like, is clearly visible from most of our launch sites. The flying is as close to Big Himalayan flying without leaving Europe, the infrastructure & security it allows.
From late August onwards the snow line has receeded enough to allow flights along the high alpine routes. On one hand the days are shorter but the valleys winds are lighter and the thermals much calmer.
Cloud base regularly reaches 4000m and more in these big mountains, this allows pilots to fly safely in otherwise extreme terrain.
The aim of these weeks is to safely guide pilots over and through the BIG stuff and still be within easy glide of good landing options.
It's surreal to have 2800m+ on the vario and still be climbing next to a huge wall of rock and ice, towering some 3-400m above you.
Back in 2006 the conditions allowed us to first fly TO the Hintertux Glacier in the early afternoon then after starting at 3250m at 1600hrs we climbed up to 4300m. We then conducted a tour of the main chain and then the main peaks around Mayrhofen. It doesn't get any bigger or better than that.
