thermal course & ahorn xc - all details
These Courses are held in Mayrhofen in July & August.
Flying in the Alps during the summer months is great for pilots who want relaxed flying in smooth & reliable conditions.
The aim of these weeks is to teach pilots the theory of how to use Alpine thermals efficiently and safely.
With the use of radios I'll guide pilots towards the rising air. I'll help pilots get established and give clear instructions helping iron out any mistakes being made.
You can generally expect climbs of between 1-3m/s.
Also during this time of year on thermic days a large amount of air is drawn in towards the centre of the Alps.
This is commonly known as 'Valley Wind'. It is usually very laminar and brings perfect soaring conditions to all mountains facing into this flow.
Later in the afternoon, from 4pm onwards this wind becomes soarable on our house mountain the Ahorn.
We then use this wind and the thermals pushed along the valley floor. We can then make our attempt to scale the Ahorn Spitz, 2968m. Heights of over 4000m are not uncommon on good days.
This course is specifically designed to help pilots with little or no thermaling experience to effortlessly climb out from their crowded sites back home.
I believe that thermaling is THE corner stone of cross-country flying. Practice makes Perfect...
