bassano del grappa thermal & xc 'LITE' - more details
We've been running designated courses in Bassano since 2006, as it is great for pilots of all levels throughout the whole season. It is the region's ultra reliability that enables pilots, I feel, to progress at a faster pace than anywhere else.
During these weeks we'll be transferring the vital skills and concepts needed to first turn the glider efficiently and dynamically then we will slowly introduce pilots to a simple, yet effective mapping technique used by the top pilots World-wide.
The concept of just simply turning the glider takes time to absorb. While in such a flyable place as Bassano and under our watchful eye pilots will be amazed at how quickly their progression advances.
The area is very simply a mix of both Alpine and flatland flying styles. Should things get too rowdy for any pilot on the ridge, whether it be their currency or ability levels lacking, they can just simply glide out into the flats for smoother, weaker climbs. The flats are great for calming the nerves; a real plus of this area's lay out.
Just the right mix to explore the turning rates and weight shifting possibilities without the worry of too much ridge traffic or closeness to the terrain.
Bassano is by far our favorite place for training, as you can see from our 'Facebook' page over the last years. More hours have been logged here per week than anywhere else. The landscape has HUGE potential for thermal training and achievable XC flights in most directions.
The Monte Grappa area is thermic all year round. However we prefer to visit when the days are long & the weather/atmosphere more Mediterranean in it's feel.
The stronger climbs can be in Spring when we run our 'PURE XC' weeks. However Summer usually delivers very interesting conditions for training the more subtle side of XC flying, as well as long XC routes.
During the season we offer these thermalling & XC 'Lite' courses as these have proved time and time again to improve pilots carving & mapping technique.
thermalling is THE 'corner-stone' of all XC flights.
During the week pilots are given short achievable goals along which the concepts can be practiced. With radio input from myself the simple commands help reinforce confidence and decisions.
First comes linking smooth efficient turns, mapping climbs & then comes linking thermals. It is a very logical progression aimed at pilots with little or no experience to get up to speed to be able to join us on 'Pure XC' weeks here or elsewhere in the future.
Also these courses for old hands wishing to find any holes in their techniques. So don't think this is just for beginners only, everyone can benefit from training with us in this area. Not only is it almost guaranteed flying it is some of the most fun & relaxed flying anywhere in Europe.
In the day's briefing we'll discuss how I believe the day will develop, whilst building a clear picture in the pilot's mind, how the terrain will locally affect thermal & cloud development. More experienced pilots can complete some short, fun packed XC flights with myself while the less experienced sit out the strong midday hours. There is a chance of yet more training in the afternoon sessions when the famous restitution kicks in.
Flying in Bassano del Grappa appears similar to UK flying, so flat land pilots will feel at home here. Except it's a little bigger, has much less wind & is flyable well over 300 days a year!
It's unique micro-climate allows us to fly defined routes in all directions, even in the flats. Always within safe gliding distance of a large, flat field.
Both the 'PURE XC' & the more thermal technique-focused 'XC Lite' weeks will be structured, coached & route orientated courses. Definitely NOT driving for endless hours or just being dropped off on launch with a weather briefing left to fend for yourselves.
Aimed at pilots wishing to progress in beautiful and very forgiving surroundings, whilst attempting some short, challenging yet very achievable routes perfecting their newly found techniques with confidence.
logistics & prices
Pilots wishing to attend will need at least just CP or IPPI 2 (P2 for USHPA pilots) plus a few hours. This course is based for pure novices to have their first crack at thermalling, so don't feel like you have to have any thermalling experience. All we ask is that you have your IPPI 3 or CP equivalent and can launch and land, unassisted.
For all the courses here we'll be staying in Semonzo at the foot of the main mountain, it is a very small village on the outskirts of Bassano del Grappa.
Most of the time we stay at the Garden Relais, it is a little more expensive than some paragliding trips but the accommodation is well worth it and pilots ask time and time again to stay here.
However if that is a little over your budget there is a cheaper option and you can have shared or single accommodation at the Canal guest house. See the booking page for the little extras available.
Getting to launch everyday is easy with our air-conditioned minibus, no queueing up for the over-crowded navettes. Plus getting home after a long XC flight is also no problem as we'll have a local driver. Just text in your position and he'll come and pick you up.
An interesting part of the course is a detailed look at our flights using Doarama, so don't forget your cables for your GPS (if you use one).
Flying into Treviso or Venice is very convenient, simple and inexpensive. Aim to arrive around midday for our courtesy transfer service.
Bassano Thermal & XC lite Course: £399
Courtesy transfer from Treviso or Venice Airports.
6 days air-to-air guidance & coaching around the Bassano del Grappa area.
Plus all transport to launch and retrieval along chosen route.
Numbers are strictly kept to a maximum of 7 pilots only.
