Huge Skies in the Dolomites

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I’ve just came back from Dolomites. Here are some pictures, once I’ve unpacked I’ll write a short report about the week.

Congratulations to all on the course, who flew well this past week in strong conditions.

Face Book Photos

Some of the pictures are from a 50km triangle/spiral around the Sasso Lungo, Rosen Garten, Sella, Pordoi and of course the Marmolada, 3400m.

Pretty intense flying but nothing like it on Earth, not advised for rookies…

10 out of 12 in Bassano, as good as it gets…

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Just got home after 2 weeks guiding in the Bassano del Grappa region. Click here for a small selection of photos.

In the end we flew a 30k FAI, 60k flat and 50k cats craddle as well as shorter fun flights around the local area.

Robert Smith told me that over the fortnight he clocked up nearly 25hrs & John Porter closed a 38k triangle on one of the days with us.

Hope to see you all again in the future guys.

60k triangle in Bassano

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Well after last weeks course we had flown around most of the area. And again we had 5 out of 6 flyable days and I myself logged up 10,5hrs without trying that hard. More was available…

Anyway today I set a 60km flat triangle around the whole area, for those who know Bassano we flew to Possango (T08), War Memorial (T01), Rubio (T13), Asolo Castle (B07) then back to goal in Semonzo (L01). It took us just over 4hrs. Base peaked at 2200m, which is pretty high for here. Check the turnpoint maps on the main web site…

Amazing viz greeted us this morning after the strong easterlys (bora) from yesterday. From altitude you could not only see the sea but also the tower in St Marks square in Venice and also the mountains in Slovenia and Croatia were visible, on the other side of the Adriatic! Insane….

Well done to Robert Smith and Ian who stayed with me for the majority of the flight, just landiung when it got tricky in the flats on the final glides home. 5m/s sink inbetween thermals was a real test of the performance of the Vega 2, great wing.

Maybe I’ll write more as the week goes on and may put some photos up, if I remember to charge my camera…
