AXIS TEST CENTRE…

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

As of this week I’m happy to be able to provide test gliders for Axis Para UK. At the moment we have the new DHV 2/EN C Vega 2 in M(85-110Kg) & L(100-130Kg). With the S to follow soon.

Once the new Venus 2 is ready in all sizes we’ll also have those for Demo. Contact us on our contact page here.

A few of the local pilots are keen to take them out this weekend for the Club Masters. I’ll post some photos when I have them. :)

All Change at the Top…

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

I’ve heard many rumours here in the Zillertal that many pilots have switched manufacturers. First and foremost is the change from Mac to both Gin and Niviuk for the Vailc brothers. A blow for Mac I think to lose two of the World’s best PWC racers.

Next change is Raul Rodrigez from Niviuk to Gin, not confirmed yet but again a huge blow for Niviuk. One of the Strongest R&D teams out there at the moment.

Last but not least is Gerald Ameseder’s departure from Airwave to UP. Again an interesting switch. He must be pretty impressed with UP’s Edge to switch after Airwave have supported him strongly over the past few years.

If there is any other news I’ll post it on the end of this one.

PS More news is that the Mayrhofen cable car is opening from the 10th May, perfect for the XC courses this season. Earlier than that we’ll be using our main launch Melchboden for the courses so there is no need to worry about suitable take offs earlier in the year :)

Greifenberg, 253km in April…

Saturday, April 12th, 2008
BIG XC on the South side of the AlpsRoland Wirgler, Gin Boom 5, flew a 253km flat triangle from Greifenberg on the 5th of April. An Astounding flight, given the length of day and having to endure sub-zero temperatures at altitude. He reported 12m/s thermal enroute.

On this day in the Zillertal a 60km Liga training task was flown. The comp had been too hastily canceled due to a bad weather report midweek. Saturday turned out to be one of the biggest days of the year so far. Wirgler proved that!

You may remember but a while I offered a trip to Greifenberg but due to lack of numbers I postponed the advanced XC course there. This flight from Wirgler proves that Greifenberg is one of the best places in the Alps to push for long XC flights. After this I’ may offer the course again next year…

Bassano XC - Wk 2

Friday, April 4th, 2008
After the success and strong conditions of the first week We watched a area of low pressure come over the area. After a bit of drizzle and some strong winds the weather cleared up to reveal again unstable, perfect spring conditions. This course had 2 pilots on it and we ended up staying on another 5 days after due to the huge deep low over north-eastern Europe. Causing 1.5m of fresh snow on the northern side of the Alps. Luckily we had it about 12-15deg the whole of the 9 days we spent there.

It became a bit of a blur how many days we’d flown some time for 3.5hrs at a time and achieved some 40km FAI triangles in the process. Climbs of up to 6m/s and good streets along the ridge meant fast lines across the Val Sugana then had some low saves out in the flats complete the tasks in the weaker, 2-3m/s climbs. We visited Asolo castle more times than I’ve ever been there in the 10 years I’ve been coming here.

With only 5 days lost in 3weeks when everywhere else in Europe was windy or rainy is not a bad average.

Well done to Simon and Paul who made the week interesting and stress free. So I’ll be organizing just one week in Bassano next year but it won’t be around Easter as I found it just a little more crowded than usual.

There were some ‘more wild than normal’ scenes on launch and some scary moments in the air but towards the end of the time the ‘experts’ had left and the more competent pilots remained.
