zillertal area - mayrhofen
mayrhofen & the surrounding area
The alpine village of Mayrhofen lies at the head of the Zillertal Valley, at an altitude of 630m and 40km S.E. of Innsbruck.
Surrounding peaks are over 3000m. Launch sites range from 1100m to 3250m.
The Ziller and Tux system is a 50km long, North-South running valley on the Northern side of the Main Alpine Divide. The border with Italy lies just 20km to the South.
Most of the flying is around the main Ziller and Tuxer valley systems and there are landing possibilities everywhere.
One of the classic flights here is the 50km circuit around the Zillertal valley. It can take 2-4hrs to complete. We have a large amount of turnpoints around the Zillertal and neighbouring Tux- and Pinzgau valleys.
All villages in the Zillertal have large landing fields & there are no boonies to walk out of.
Our main landing area in town is huge and a just short walk from the accommodation and the main gondola stations.
In the winter the village is a lively ski resort and is geared up for tourism all year round, with central cable car systems and many restaurants and bars.
The Zillertal is home to ex-World champion & long time test pilot/constructor for UP Stefan Steiglair, Triple World Record holder (Tandem XC) Jurgen Stock and former-Austrian champion & many times Austrian XC Champion, Thomas Walder.
If you want to improve your flying skills then make sure you fly with pilots who know their area and it's quirks inside-out.
around mayrhofen - food & drink
Breakfast is served at the Martinus from 8 - 9.30am, it's the usual cereal, cheese & meats, toast/bread with juice, tea & coffee.
There are many places to eat out in Mayrhofen at night.
These are my favourites...
Kramerwirt - Best traditional food in town
Coup & More - International
MO's - American Style Diner
Ciao - Great Pasta & salads
The Steakhouse - Big Steaks
& there's a Chinese if you like.
Typically a meal out will cost between 10-15euros, inc drink.
There are restaurants & restrooms on most of the launches/landing fields we use. However on XC days it's usually wise to take lunch with you as you never know where you'll land.
Scotland Yard Pub is the main hang out for pilots after a long days flying. However we normally debrief at either one of the main LZ's at the end of the day.
Expect to pay 3,5euros for 0,5l Zillertal Beer in most places.
